At Westward we’re Rethinking Last-Mile Delivery

Traffic in urban areas – leads to escalating fuel costs and emissions – and government interventions regarding environmental concerns are usually associated with the industries’ challenges.

The process can be time-consuming and represents a significant share in the delivery price. According to multiple reports, it is estimated to account for at least 28% of total shipment cost.

How do Electric vehicles help solve some problems in last-mile delivery? Each commercial truck or van that goes electric has a more significant impact than a commuter’s vehicle making the switch – trucks are much more polluting and less efficient.

Sustainability and efficiency are essential. Last-mile delivery can be more environmentally friendly with green fuels. Electric vehicles and route strategies can reduce emissions and not compound current environmental issues.

Electric fleets can also replace internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles for cost purposes. It usually takes less than half of the investment to fuel an electric vehicle than an ICE vehicle. This online tool can help calculate estimated savings for fleets looking to transition to an electric one.

Never heard of Last-Mile Delivery?

Last-mile delivery – the final leg of logistics – describes shipments from a sorting center to the customer’s doorstep. It involves the transportation of goods in multiple routes with small parcel sizes.

The Future of Last Mile Delivery

Smarter Delivery

Delivery vehicles — typically vans and smaller trucks — are much easier to transition to electric than heavy trucks, for example. The duty cycle works well with electric: a short length of operation, the ability to return to a central base, and frequent stops and starts that work well with regenerative braking.

In addition, long-lasting lithium-ion batteries provide enough range for many routes with plenty of charging time overnight. For example, for a 20kwh battery with a range of up to 120 miles, the estimated charging required is eight hours.

EV Delivery Focus

UPS, Amazon, and DHL are replacing gas-fueled units with electric versions to boost profits, fight climate change and decrease urban pollution. According to their official statement, FedEx’s entire parcel pickup and the delivery fleet will be zero-emission electric vehicles by 2040. Electric vehicles not only have high operational efficiency and performance, but they are also cheaper to operate as well.

The MAX-EV for the Last-Mile Delivery

Westward Industries has the right tool for the job. The MAX-EV line is comprised of two options. The MAX-EV 4, a street-legal LSV (low-speed vehicle) 4 wheeler, resembling a small work van, designed with productivity in mind to support the micro-distribution and Last-mile delivery industry while carrying nearly 66 cubic feet of cargo with an optional 1500lb payload.

The industrial-grade build with the cargo van body – refrigerated option coming soon – is the perfect small work van for the last leg of goods transportation like mail, packages, equipment, catering, food, beverage, groceries, and ready-made food. The tough, compact unit can handle the repetitive duties associated with the task.

The MAX-EV 3 wheeler, a small cargo van, allows for quicker delivery with a reduced payload. Expect speeds of up to 45mph, a total payload of 700lbs
